Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
