Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
