RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
